Functions
Brake drums were widely used in the past due to their relatively simple structure and lower cost. However, they have some drawbacks. One of the main issues is that they are less efficient in dissipating heat compared to brake discs, which can lead to brake fade under heavy use. Additionally, the braking force distribution in a brake drum system may not be as even as in a disc braking system, affecting braking performance and stability to some extent.
In modern vehicles, disc brakes are more commonly used for the front wheels, while drum brakes may still be found on the rear wheels in some cases, especially in budget or commercial vehicles, due to cost considerations.
